Now that the dust has finally settled from the huge hype that surrounded the release of Justice's debut album, we can appreciate that this is a great lp. However, it is definitely stronger in some parts than others , and the comparisons with Daft Punk's debut, must be very flattering to the Justice boys. Apart from the singles, the two standout tracks for me are DNVO and Stress, the latter which has been getting plays from Erol Alkan. DNVO is one of the more pop inspired moments on the album, not too dissimilar to some of the tracks on Daft Punk's Discovery album.

ok so heres some moozaq i've been listenin to in the past few months/years/decades. all this stuff from my phone right now wakes me in the morning, shares my sat at the computer work hours, coffee moments, way home on tha train and getting drugk with me pals. its self indulgent but since i've not been participating on a regular basis of late - this is a whole month's fix in one.

Panda Bear - Take Pills has been my morning alarm call for a fair few months now (get up, take yer prozac or not as the case maybe take the train and get to work!) i know very little about animal collective apart from they have native american style names and prolly live in teepees - this is/will be? the last single to come from panda bear's album and doesnt really need any more publicity cos its cult and been blogged ferociously - may aswell join in. the Beach Boyesque harmonies, rich textures and trippy chord changes totally justify the ablums critical acclaimation.

Alan Shacklock interpolating ennio morricone, well not quite but that bombers track i recently put up was the b-side of a disco cover version of the mexican from babe ruth's first album circa 1972 (coincidentally my year of birth, shit! 35 - july 7, wanna get high with me?) well that bombers version is my all time bestist track, but rather than post the babe ruth original that most folk know, enjoy this galloping horse rock track "Wells Fargo" from the same album 'first base'. janita 'jenny' hann's vocal is fuckin great, the sax totally knows when to suck and when to blow and parts of the driving handclap groove demonstrates a serious funk edge. the best thing is that they're english dunno why thats the best, but with a name like babe ruth you could be duped into thinkin they were yankers.

melancholy indie track - know pretty much fook all about Half Cousin but theyre contemporary and it's definatlley got an accordian and what sounds like an oboe in the composition which works for me, this is alroit r kid: Half Cousin - Big Chief (The B&B Frequenter)

First up is a track by A.I.M. It has an old school electro vibe to it and is not dissimilar to anything by Afrika Bambaataa. Unfortunately I have no other information of this artiste/outfit.

So back in 1986 I remember eating as many kinder eggs as my mom would buy me (which was not very often as she said they were a wast of money). The reason for this was so I could get my hands a figurine of the Mexico 86 world cup mascot. Without the luck of Charlie Bucket I failed in finding one.

Anyway a while ago I did find the theme tune from the Mexico World Cup Grandstand in a local chaza. I don't remember it at the time (some of my older amigo's from this blog may remember it). It's a BBC classic. Didn't the BBC commission good tunes back in the day?

Produced by Heads who were John Salmon, Mark Campbell and Bruce Talbot. Haven't got any more information but I'm guessing these guys have produced other crackers.

I recently saw Ratatat support CSS at the Astoria in London. They’re a New York outfit consisting of Mike Stroud on guitar and Evan Mast on synthesizer. Their wall of atmospheric sound reminded me very much of the German synth pioneers Tangerine Dream, (with a bit of Iron Maiden for good measure) who I had seen play at the Astoria a few years previously. In fact that was the only other gig I’d been to at the Astoria. Therefore it's fitting that I dedicate this blog to an old and new form of atmospheric/electronic sound.

Killing Joke

Killing Joke are one of the most significant English bands to have emerged from the post-punk era of the late- 1970's/early 80's. Their 'Nervous System/ Turn To Red' EP (1979) combined primitive punk rock mixed with funk and in the case of 'Turn to Red', a more dub/reggae style. In 1980, Killing Joke released their self titled debut album. On the US release they included the track 'Change', which James Murphy intrestingly and obviously enough based the LCD Soundsystem single 'Losing My Edge' on.

First post of any kind of blogging nature from me so I'll begin by thanking Mit (et al) for the kind invite and help with getting this computer div as far down the line as this.

Anyway, I guess I hope to be able to share some music that, for whatever reason, is special to me (and perhaps, occasionally just new and interesting) and once the ol' confidence starts rising, maybe even the odd deranged musing as well.

So, where to start ... of all the records in the world that I know and love I'd like to offer up Kano's 'It's a War' as my opening gambit. To me, this is one of the finest exponents of the monumental Italian Disco scene of the 70s and 80s. To listen to this is to marvel that it was made in 1980 and not last year or summat.

I'll be posting some of the re-edits that I record under the Centro Disco moniker especially if they are working well for me in my DJ sets. With that in mind, here's a recent re-edit of the Pointer Sisters that is pretty much symptomatic of the edits I like to do - fairly simple, but 'temponised' and mildly restructured for the DJs to mix with at the parties.

Hello, thanks to everyone who made it down to the Death warehouse party, it was a great party, next one this Friday. Extra special thanks to our guest DJ, Darren Coates, who's given me a cd of his great disco re-edits, which I'm going to post a couple of on here, so keep your eyes peeled.

I'm posting two completely separate pieces of music, (or are they?) Firstly a track from Diana Ross' debut album, which i just completely love, and can't stop playing at the moment. She made this shortly after she had finished with the Supremes, her producers were trying to get her to go disco, but she wasn't comfortable with it. I love how this track starts all slow, with a real Motown edge, before the tempo changes and it turns into this sublime disco work out, almost as if they were starting with something she was used to, before getting her into full on party mood. P.s. if you have heard this before, and think your not into it, or download it, and think your not into it, please give it a few more listens! 8 minutes of genius in my opinion!

Next up we have Battles, a band who have recently been signed to one of my all time favorite labels, Warp records. It seems Warp have started to focus on bands much more in the last few years, with mixed results (!!!- yes please, Maximo park-no thanks.) I still love having my head well and truly pummeled, with some really cut up drum n bass and techno at the occasional warp night, but some of the band orientated stuff they're releasing is also really working for me. Battles make nerdy math rock, but i reckon this tune has a real dance floor edge. Ive been dropping this into sets, its got a great beat to it, despite is left field leanings. Check it out!

I first got into Joakim through his great remixes, and production for Spanish band Panico. This is the new single of Joakim's album, Monsters & Silly songs. The album really surprised me, as i expected something in the more straight forward indie/dance crossover vein, that a lot of bands are doing at the moment. The album is in fact much more complex and layered, with no 'big' tracks on it. There's a large collection of different sounds and styles on the album, but manages to pull it off. In parts it reminds me of Liars first album, or early Sonic Youth. This track is Joakim's attempt at making a good pop song, and i think he's managed it.

~~OF MONTREAL - GRONLANDIC EDIT~~

This is an track off Of Montreal's third album, Hissing Fauna, are you the destroyer? I've totally fallen in love with the album, it reminds me of the band Clor, which split up after their great debut l.p. It's full of catchy pop songs with loads of hooks, and there's a lot of post punk influences on it too. There's great beach boys esque vocal harmonys on some of the tracks , great for when the weather is like this. Summer music.

Both of these records are great, I'd recommend you go out and buy them!

OK so jack slack has his weekly foreplay, now were gonna get down to some real sex. each saturday my *intention* is to rip a piece of my old vinyl for my benefit more than anyone else's - so actually it's masturbation, consider it a treat for my doing it publicly as i'm not known for my exhibitionism.
Second up (after rockberry) is this Thomson Twins B side from '82. Their Quick Step and Side Kick LP was the joint 3rd record i ever owned (maybe we should all post our first owned music it could be interesting, or embaressing) from which came the A side of this 12" - 'Lies' which I rescued from my aunt's loft about 10 years ago, i think it belonged to my cousin, it was dusty as fuck and looked like it had been scratched with wire wool. Well with some TLC, soapy warm water and de-pop n click technology it sounds fair enough to post.
Anyway, I lost my spanky walkman mobile last weekend, i was proper pissed, but it was probably a robbery, hence this choice - btw Renegade Soundwave came a close second.

I've always liked The Beat. They’re sound is more diverse than other ska bands.

The track ‘Hit It" has got a real dancy beat and rhythm, bit like A Certain Ratio or ESG.

“I Confess” is a beautiful song. Dave Wakeling's voice is fantastic on this track. Trumpet solo is pretty good as well.

They're from Birmingham too which is a bonus.

Huggy Bear was an English riot grrrl band, formed in 1991 in Brighton.

On February 14 1993, Huggy Bear performed "Her Jazz" on the TV show, The Word. After they played their fun, chaotic set, the band stayed in the studio to watch a report on 2 American models who called themselves "the Barbi Twins". Huggy Bear and their fans became upset at this and started shouting at the show's noticeably uncomfortable presenter Terry Christian. They were violently ejected from the studio and a spokesperson for The Word later said that one of the band's friends had "bit the face of a member of our production team." The performance was given a Melody Maker cover, the event being compared to the Sex Pistols Bill Grundy incident.

I love this guy's stuff. If you've read anything about Arthur Russell you know what a talented musician he was and what a wonderful life he lived. Living as a Buddhist in a commune during his teen years and then later working in New York combining contemporary and classical styles of music and developing a new experimental disco.

This track is by one of his many bands - Loose Joints. It's probably been posted loads of times on the blogs. I've been listening to it for a while but recently a good friend of mine, Jon, played it at Death at the Disco and it has rekindled my love for this classic.

I hope some of you haven't heard it before.

I ran across digital emotion for the first time about 5 years ago...Irresistably catchy electro/disco, italodisco, whatever you want to call it... They're part of what turned me on to Italo disco. It's mindless, it's cheesy, but who cares- these weren't meant to be brilliant artistic pieces. These still serve their purpose, even today- fun, mindless dance music. It's hard to choose favourites, but if I had to- it's a toss-up between "Go Go Yellow Screen" "Time" and "Get Up Action."If you like 80's music, disco, electro/electroclash, retro... these are definatly worth a look.

This '83 Roberto Ferrante production (he was only 18 at the time!), "Come on Closer" is true party disco which is pretty different from the typical dark and electronic sound of early 80's italo disco - sounding more "American" with a proto-house feel which is probably why this used to be (and actually still is) a big track in the late 80's Chicago house scene.

This song reminds me of good times with close friends...It's Bukka with a capital 'B'
